Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) is supported by foundations and corporations, but we rely on gifts from individuals like you to make our unique programs possible.  Your donation will help us create accessible sports and recreation opportunities for people with physical disabilities.

For over 30 years, BORP has been providing challenging, high-quality sports and recreation programs for disabled children, youth and adults, whatever their physical abilities.  However, BORP provides far more than play.  BORP’s award-winning programs have allowed participants of all ages and abilities to increase their fitness and mobility, improve their overall health, and develop the skills and confidence needed to become healthy, productive citizens.

Support BORP

You can help make sports and recreation accessible for everyone, by making an online gift:

Double Your Gift!

Did you know that many corporations offer Matching Gift programs?  To find out if your employer offers such a program:

  1. Ask the Human Resources Officer where you work if there is a charitable Matching Gift program (hundreds of companies—large and small—have one).
  2. If the answer is “yes”, ask for a Matching Gift Form and complete your portion. IF THE ANSWER IS NO, talk to your HR Director and suggest implementing a program
  3. Mail us the completed form. That’s all it takes to double the good you do!

Other Ways to Give

If you’d like to discuss specific giving opportunities such as gifts of stock, planned giving, or in-kind donations, please call our Development Manager, Josh Thelin at (510) 849-4663 x1307 or email josh@borp.org.

BORP Mission

Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization working to improve the health, independence and social integration of people with physical disabilities through sports, fitness and recreation programs. At BORP, we believe that sports and recreation provide a path to greater achievement to which all people should have access, and we continually strive to make this a reality.

Testimonials

"I've been bringing my 7 year old son to BORP for the last 3 years, and it has been tremendous for him and our family! For my son, who has limited balance and mobility due to cerebral palsy, his BORP trike allows him to get much needed exercise and fresh air, and gives him independence as he learns how to pedal and steer the cycle. Our weekly cycling trip also allows our family to get out together for a walk (his dad and I walk, while our son cycles), and when we come home, he is energized from seeing friends at BORP and also relaxed (after getting that exercise) so he can focus on projects at home such as homework. BORP is an amazing resource for families of people with disabilities. The cost to buy one of these adaptive cycles for home use is out of reach of our family. Without BORP we would have no other options for this vital source of exercise for our son, and the community building aspect of meeting other families and other children with disabilities is also a welcome benefit. We love BORP!" (A BORP mom)
"Power soccer provides me with an outlet in which I can feel *able* to do physical sports that I used to do in my youth. I enjoy the thrill, the challenge, the adrenaline, the complex strategies and plays, the camaraderie, and the goal to achieve that comes with playing power soccer."

“My daughter took part in the Junior Adventures program this year and she told me that it was the best summer of her life! She also said: ‘I am lucky to be disabled because I get to do all this cool stuff!’ What more can a parent ask for? At the end of the summer my child had the best summer of her life and got a positive outlook on her disability.”

(Parent of a daughter who participates in BORP’s Junior Adventures Program)

“BORP has been life changing for my son. When he began with BORP, he saw, for the first time, kids who are extremely capable and wheelchair users. His teammates, coaches, and staff supported, encouraged and inspired him. From the very first wheelchair basketball practice that he attended, we noticed a difference. His skills and drive increased at a dramatic rate. He went from allowing us to push him everywhere, to slapping our hands away. He saw himself as an athlete again and was motivated to practice and exercise daily. Today he is able to walk about 50 feet independently and he can push himself up ramps, over bumps and around (sometimes through!) obstacles. BORP has granted us a miracle and we are so thankful for this organization and everyone who participates in, supports, and works for BORP.” (A young BORP athlete's mom)
As a T-10 paraplegic who's a busy father of three and a practicing physician, I find that the BORP cycling program provides with crucial access to regular exercise. The staff and volunteers at the cycling center provide a well-organized, friendly atmosphere for us "regulars" as well for those exploring adaptive cycling for the first time. The BORP adaptive cycling center is truly essential to my overall well-being. (A regular BORP cyclist)
The value of BORP's cycling program - both to the youth and adults who participate and to the community at-large - is extremely hard to understate. My own cycling career has improved both my physical and mental health, taught me confidence, and fostered invaluable relationships with other members of my community. In turn, I have been told that my accomplishments are inspiring to those around me. Multiply that impact by every participant in the BORP program, and square the inspiration factor - to see the joy on the faces of the children and severely disabled individuals as they power themselves over the bridge to the Bay Trail, you cannot help but know this program is positively changing lives for the better, if only because their joy is contagious! BORP's cycling program is a truly unique Bay Area institution. (A longtime BORP participant and two-time cycling bronze medalist at the London 2012 Paralympics)
