A Walk for All Senses on the Ohlone Greenway
Sunday, July 23 @ 11 a.m.
Leaders: Janet Byron and Robert Johnson
Start: North Berkeley BART Station (southeast side)
Join the co-authors of Berkeley Walks: Revealing Rambles in America’s Most Intriguing City for this accessible stroll — or roll — along the Ohlone Greenway in Berkeley. We’ll focus on the varied sights, sounds, touches, smells, and tastes along 1.2 miles of this flat, well-loved bike and pedestrian trail on a former railroad right-of-way. At Marin Avenue, you can continue to Solano Avenue for lunch at a nearby eatery or double back with the group, passing a few more restaurants on Gilman Street. Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) is co-sponsoring this walk. The route has sitting areas and accessible restrooms, and service and guide dogs are welcome. If you are physically disabled or sight impaired and need transportation, contact BORP’s Lori Gray by July 1 at (510) 849-4663, ext. 1373 or email@example.com. Janet and Bob will have books for sale for $20 (cash, check, or credit card).
North Berkeley BART last Wednesday and talked to the attendant – the restrooms there are accessible and open to the public. There is also an accessible toilet at Cedar Rose Park along the Ohlone Greenway, not too far from the BART station. We’ll turn the walk around at Marin Avenue (1.2 miles from BART) rather than Solano (1.5 miles from BART) as previously discussed, but you’re welcome to go on to Solano Avenue or leave the walk at Marin. Or you can walk back with us to the Gilman eateries. If restrooms are needed at the end on Marin, the Albany library is right there and has accessible restrooms and is open on Sundays 1 to 5p.
About timing: We will begin the walk at 11 a.m., so if restrooms are needed at the start, you can plan your arrival at the station accordingly. Round trip, we expect the walk will last two hours with a stop at the community gardens on the Greenway at Hopkins for refreshments around 1130a.
$10 program fee for participants plus cost of lunch and no program fee for volunteers plus cost of lunch. Deadline is on Monday, July 10, 2017.
