Farewell and Thank You to BORP Driver, Joe Melancon! +Meet BORP’s New Drivers

Joe behind the wheel of the BORP Bus

Everyone here at BORP wishes to express our gratitude for Joe Melancon, our BORP bus driver who retired at the end of 2017. Joe safely transported program participants for many years. He applied his knowledge of Bay Area backroads, highways and byways to ensure the best route possible for BORP adventures. The youth enjoyed talking to Joe about school, music, sports, and life goals during their shuttles. Joe’s cheerful nature, story sharing, and bonus tour guiding will be sorely missed! We hope to see him at BORP functions this year and possibly riding at the Cycling Center.

Meet our new part-time BORP bus drivers:
We welcome Michael Connor to the BORP team! He has experience working in the nonprofit sector and with youth and adults with physical disabilities. He enjoys the outdoors, driving, and has been a great driver and support on outings.
We welcome Mahasin Musawwir to the BORP team! She has experience working with youth and seniors with physical disabilities and loves the community that BORP serves. She is excited to share her excellent driving skills with the youth and adult program participants.

Ride the BORP bus from Monet, to Manet, to Matisse

By Sarah-Dawn Smith on October 18, 2017 No Comments

BORP BusDid you know the De Young and Legion of Honor Museums in San Francisco have Access Days? These occur on one or two Mondays during their temporary exhibitions. The entrance and guided tours are reserved for those who would benefit from visual, hearing, or mobility accommodations. Do you want to plan a group trip for your staff, clients, or organization members? This is just one example of many local trip destinations. BORP vehicles are accessible, which makes it possible for your entire group to travel together to destinations that would be difficult to reach with basic public transport. We seek opportunities to serve more organizations in our community!

If you are interested in planning a group trip and want information on how a BORP bus could help with your transportation needs, contact BORP Transportation Coordinator, Sarah-Dawn Smith, at transportation@borp.org or call (510) 849-4663 x 1378 or MOBILE (949) 205-9058.

BORP’s accessible group trip transportation service is made possible by funding from Alameda County Transportation Commission through the Special Transportation Program for Seniors and People with Disabilities (Measure B funds). This service is aimed at improving the mobility of people with disabilities and increasing access to sports and recreation activities by supplementing conventional fixed route service and addressing the current gap in accessible group trip options for youth and adults with disabilities in Alameda County.  More information about this project can be found on our website and at alamedaactc.org.

Best BORP Basketball Camp Ever

By Trooper Johnson on August 15, 2017 No Comments

Group picture of the youth at basketball campWe held the BORP Basketball Camp July 17-23 at James Kenney. During the week we had 10 kids attend the camp with seven of the kids staying overnight. The camp includes a combination of morning conditioning, afternoon basketball, and evening social time for the kids.

During the week the kids pushed 18 miles during their conditioning workouts, including their push across the Bay Bridge.  They played basketball for 24 hours on the court which included a mix of sport specific skills instruction and scrimmages. On the final day of the camp, they visited the Cycle center for a seven-mile ride before heading to the gym for four hours of basketball, followed by an hour on the ice for a skating session.
In addition to the kids attending the camp, Christie Levine and James Bohnett dropped in to talk to the kids and run some of their favorite college drills.
It was the best camp ever.

Family Friendly Central Park (Lake Elizabeth) in Fremont

Central Park encompasses 450 acres in the heart of Fremont with activities for the whole family including reserved and drop-in picnic sites, children’s play areas, basketball, tennis, fishing, skate park, boat rentals, and launches. A 2-mile paved, level trail circles 80-acre Lake Elizabeth with Mission Peak providing a backdrop. There’s plenty of parking and it’s an easy half-mile stroll from the Fremont BART station along city sidewalks with curb ramps. Weekends can be quite crowded and summer temps can be high so plan accordingly.

Located at Paseo Padre Parkway at Stevenson Boulevard. For more information, click here to visit the park’s website.

BORP Transportation Services Fill Gaps and Open up Opportunities

By Sarah-Dawn Smith on October 26, 2016 1 Comments

When the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) began planning their board meeting reception at the Ed Roberts Campus (ERC), they were faced with the question of how to get their group to the ERC in Berkeley from their hotel in Emeryville, and back again. Tim Fuchs of the NCIL contacted BORP he said, “We were having a heck of a time finding accessible transportation options. We have about 23 people, 6 of whom use wheelchairs.” After calling taxi, van and charter companies for days, he was having no luck.

BORP has two accessible buses, which were made possible by a Federal Transit Administration Section 5310 vehicle grant and a Paratransit Gap Grant from Alameda County Transportation Commission (Measure B funds). Each bus allows five to six people in wheelchairs to be transported at one time. And, in addition to providing transportation for BORP participants, we also offer a fee-for-service Group Trip Service option with discounted rates for disability groups and nonprofits. It was the perfect solution for NCIL, according to Fuchs who said, “We’re happy to pay for these services and I’d much rather give our money to BORP than a cab company.” And so, BORP will shuttle NCIL’s group together to their reception at the Ed Roberts Campus.

“I think this is a prime example of why our buses are important to our community and how they truly fill a gap between para-transit, public transit and other means of transportation which may not be accessible or affordable,” said Sarah-Dawn Smith, BORPs Transportation Coordinator.

In addition to NCIL, we have also recently served National Federation for the Blind California, Jewish Community Center East Bay, Children’s Skin Disease Foundation, and Project Access Oakland, to name a few.

Our vehicles open up opportunities to serve more community organizations!
