Wildflower Season

It’s that time of year when people flock outdoors in search of the best places to see wildflowers. Most articles about the best places to go however, don’t include any disabled accessibility information. The other thing is that rainfall and timing dictate whether there will be good wildflower viewing so blooms that wow can be elusive.

While I have not yet been in search of them this year, I have in past years found the following locations provided some good trailside viewing.

Sunol Regional Wilderness in Sunol. The Camp Ohlone Road trail at Sunol is quite hilly and a manual wheelchair user would require good upper body strength. The surface is aggregate with firm underlayment.

Sonoma Valley Regional Park in Kenwood. The paved Valley of the Moon Trail runs through the center of  the park for 1.2 miles one way and has no grade greater than 8% (an ADA ramp).

Both sites have accessible restrooms and parking.

While not quite the same, you’re more likely to get your flower fix at a botanical garden. Here are a few accessible gardens: Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, Filoli, The Gardens at Lake Merritt, and Golden Gate Park.
