What People Are Saying

We got to try out all the activities first hand before needing to sign up for the official program. It was great to get an idea of how everything works.

A great way to try out a bunch of new sports and meet new people.

Everything was perfect!!! Kudos to everyone for a job well done. Transportation was great, communication was great, and the layout of programs was perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Expo take place?

Activities will be held at three Berkeley locations:

  • James Kenney Community Center (1720 8th Street): Main event hub with wheelchair rugby, goalball, power soccer, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball, fitness classes, and all-day pickleball. Also features a family festival and resource fair. Open 10 AM – 4 PM.
  • BORP Kayaking and Cycling Center (80 Bolivar Dr): Cycling and kayaking, 11 AM – 2 PM.
  • Berkeley Ironworks (800 Potter St): Climbing, 1 – 4 PM. New climbers must complete Touchstone’s waiver.
Is transportation provided?

Yes. A free accessible shuttle will run from North Berkeley BART to all locations. The bus has a lift and can accommodate manual and power wheelchairs. Space is limited and you must email transportation@borp.org ahead of time to reserve your spot.

Will there be parking?

There’s free street parking at James Kenney (some spots reserved for attendees), Berkeley Ironworks, and the BORP Center.

How much does it cost?

All activities are free! Donations to BORP are welcome to help keep our programming accessible.

Do I need to sign up ahead of time?

Please register in advance if you can—it helps us plan. Attendees who have not pre-registered will need to fill out the registration form upon arrival. Registration is required for transportation and climbing, and strongly encouraged for all activities.

Are there volunteer opportunities?

Yes! We need volunteers across all sites. See sign-up info above or email info@borp.org.

Do I need to fill out forms?

If you don’t pre-register, you’ll need to complete a brief form and waiver on-site.

Are there special requirements for climbing?

All climbing is free and equipment is provided, but registration closes September 25. New climbers at Touchstone gyms must complete the waiver.

Do I have to stay all day?

Not at all. The Expo runs 10 AM – 4 PM. Come for a single activity or try several.

What activities are best for me if I’m blind or low-vision?
  • Goalball: Indoor team sport for blind/low-vision athletes. All players wear eyeshades. Players throw an audible ball to score; teams defend on hands and knees.
  • Rock Climbing: Easily adapted. Many climbers use sight guides (“callers”) who describe holds as the climber ascends.
  • Cycling: Tandem bikes available; pilots provide guiding.
  • Kayaking: Double kayaks allow pairing with guides.
  • Fitness: Live classes like Rumba with Tina and SitFit with Nate—upbeat dance and strength training for all ages and abilities.
What activities are best for me if I have impairment in only my lower limbs? (including leg amputees and paraplegics)
  • Wheelchair Basketball: Similar rules to stand-up; played in lightweight sport chairs for agility and stability.
  • Pickleball: Same court, paddle, and ball; adaptive rules allow two bounces. Great for playing alongside nondisabled friends.
  • Rock Climbing: Adapted with systems and equipment for balance, stability, and mechanical assistance as needed.
  • Cycling: Recumbent trikes (including electric) and multiple styles of handcycles.
  • Kayaking: Transfer support (slide bench, transfer chairs, motorized lift), accessible dock, and stable kayaks.
  • Fitness: Rumba with Tina and SitFit with Nate—dance and strength classes for all ages and abilities.
What activities are best for me if I have impairment in all four limbs? (including quadriplegics, stroke survivors, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, TBI’s)
  • Wheelchair Rugby: High-intensity contact sport in specially designed chairs. For athletes with impairment in three or more limbs who can self-propel and safely withstand contact.
  • Power Soccer: Team sport for power chair users (4v4 on a basketball court). Players pass and shoot to score; footguards attach to chairs.
  • Rock Climbing: Adapted with equipment for stability and mechanical assistance.
  • Pickleball: Two-bounce rule; many participants tape/wrap paddles and may play from power chairs. Inclusive with nondisabled partners.
  • Cycling: Multiple styles of handcycles; some can tandem with another bike. Lift available to aid transfers.
  • Kayaking: Transfer aids (slide bench, transfer chairs, motorized lift), accessible dock, stabilizing outriggers, and adaptive mitts/paddles.
  • Fitness: Rumba with Tina and SitFit with Nate—dance and strength classes for all ages and abilities.
Can I attend if I’ve never tried adaptive sports before?

Absolutely! Our staff are ready to introduce you.

Can I attend if I don’t have a disability?

Yes. Family, friends, and community members are welcome to participate or observe.

Will I get to play every activity?

Expect a taste of everything. You’ll likely get minutes on the court, a short climb, cycle, or paddle, and a chance to explore adaptive equipment.

Will there be food and water?

Food: There will be a food truck with items to purchase. Free snacks also available.

Water: Refillable stations at James Kenney (bring your bottle!) and water at the Cycling Center.
